Job summary

Brown University Health is seeking a Phlebotomy Technician to obtain blood and other specimens under supervision. You will transport specimens, enter data into the computerized system, and maintain related records in accordance with hospital policies.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Phlebotomy certificate through NACLS and/or completion of a phlebotomy certificate program to include formal internship demonstrating 100 successful venipunctures.
• In lieu of internship, 6 months of phlebotomy experience may be considered.
• In lieu of phlebotomy certification, 5 plus years direct phlebotomy experience may be considered.
• Ability to perform venipuncture techniques and capillary puncture on adults, children and infants.
• Interpersonal skills to obtain and provide information to patients and to explain procedures effectively.
• Clerical skills to prepare and maintain records and reports, including keyboard data entry.
• Familiarity with blood collection equipment, anticoagulants, safety precautions.
• Ability to distinguish chromatic colors.
• A Phlebotomy certificate required.

Responsibilities

• Obtains blood samples from patients using venipuncture or capillary puncture techniques.
• Transports specimens and completes basic records and clerical support.
• Verifies patient identity and prepares patients for specimen collection.
• Labels, wraps and documents samples for transportation.
• Maintains records on sample procurement and data in the department system.
• Interviews patients to collect insurance and biographical information for registration.
• Provides patients with required forms and instructions for tests or appointments.
• Contacts patients or external offices to obtain additional information as needed.
• Assists with data entry and corrects billing errors as necessary.
