Job summary

UMass Memorial Health in Massachusetts is seeking a Laboratory Support Technician to join the Central Processing area. You will receive and process specimens, prepare reagents, and maintain accurate records to support patient care.

The role requires data entry familiarity, medical terminology knowledge, and the ability to work a 24-hour schedule with evening and weekend shifts. This non-exempt position offers clear responsibility and growth within a large health system.

Qualifications

• High School graduate with familiarity in data entry and medical terminology.
• Equivalency may be substituted with education and experience as appropriate.

Responsibilities

• Receives specimens from couriers and checks manifests to verify appropriate count.
• Logs and assigns accession numbers to specimens and requisitions received.
• Sorts and triages requisitions and specimens to appropriate workstation; completes and files manifests.
• Answers telephones and communicates pertinent information. Sends specimens and carriers to various sites using pneumatic tube or dumbwaiter.
• Processes specimens including centrifugation, pour-off, aliquoting, and labeling.
• Registers short form outreach specimens received from clients.
• Performs a variety of routine duties to assist in laboratory processes, such as preparing reagents and stains, preparing slides and specimens, drawing blood, autoclaving and washing glassware, disposal of biohazardous waste.
• Maintains inventory levels and stores equipment and supplies in a neat and orderly manner.
• Maintains accurate records of processes performed, using manual and computer-based systems.
• Logs in error book specimens that are received without proper tubes or requisitions.
• Complies with all laboratory quality, health and safety policies, regulations and requirements.
