Job summary

Qualifications

• Hospital laboratory experience required.
• ASCP certification, or equivalent, preferred.
• Current and Valid State License if the laboratory is located in a state where required.

Responsibilities

• Functions as the department Section Supervisor or Lead, supervising daily operation of the section(s).
• Provides consultative services to the medical staff as Technical Consultant.
• Oversees department performance improvement programs and participates in hospital initiatives.
• Responsible for technical and fiscal management of the section(s).
• Oversees quality management/assurance program and regulatory compliance.
• Assesses staff competency and completes performance evaluations timely.
• Ensures accuracy of patient results prior to reporting.
• Develops, maintains and updates section policies and procedures.
• Reviews quality control with documentation of corrective actions when tests deviate.
• Identifies problems affecting test performance and notifies Director/Medical Director as needed.
• Performs laboratory procedures using manual and automated methods in Hematology, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Microbiology, Immunology, etc.
• Ensures maintenance documentation for equipment (daily, weekly, monthly).
• Recognizes age-specific differences in results from newborns to geriatrics.
• Ensures proficiency testing samples are tested like patient samples and no lab-to-lab collaboration before reporting results.
• Ensures currency of all laboratory policies and procedures.
• Adheres to safety, infection control, emergency preparedness, and HR policies.
• May handle LIS and/or POC responsibilities.
• Other tasks may be assigned by department manager/director.
