Job summary

Virginia Tech is seeking an Evening Audio Visual Systems Technician to support Classroom Audio Visual Services. This role reports to the Director under the Office of the University Registrar and covers end‑user meetings, testing, maintenance, and repairs across classrooms, conference rooms, and boardrooms.

The position requires strong AV knowledge, effective communication, and the ability to work independently within a team.

Qualifications

  • Several years of experience in the audio‑visual industry.
  • Experience managing people.
  • Experience in customer support related to AV systems.
  • Experience troubleshooting AV components and systems.
  • Experience documenting issues and resolutions through a ticketing system.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.
  • Experience with Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android computer systems.
  • Must be able to move or lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to work from ladders or scaffolding as required.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Provide preventative maintenance to AV systems including testing and cleaning.
  • Test each AV system as required or requested.
  • Meet end users to work through issues within a given space or spaces.
  • Create and update help‑desk tickets once tasks have been completed.
  • Provide support and recommendations to end users for in‑person, remote, and hybrid instructional solutions.
  • Troubleshoot reported or discovered issues in any of the supported spaces as assigned.
  • Update and help maintain an accurate inventory when components need to be changed.
  • Install AV components as needed and perform a thorough test once installation is completed.
  • Manage work‑study students to assist with the tasks noted above.

Job Description
The primary role of this position is to serve as the evening shift audio‑visual technician for Classroom Audio Visual Services. Reporting to the Director of Classroom Audio Visual Services under the Office of the University Registrar, this person is responsible for providing support in the form of end‑user meetings, system testing, preventative maintenance, and AV system repair in spaces under the purview of Classroom Audio Visual Services including general assignment classrooms, departmental spaces, conference rooms, and boardrooms. This position requires a high level of technical knowledge in regards to audio, video, and control systems. The person in this position will be responsible for troubleshooting issues reported by end users or found during system testing and locating a solution in a timely manner. This position will provide assistance and support as needed for Classroom Audio Visual Services operations. The Evening Audio Visual Systems Technician will be responsible for managing work‑study students to help aid in their duties when applicable.
Strong oral and written communication skills are required. The role will involve articulating AV issues and solutions with end users using layman terms, and with other AV team members using technical terminology. While part of a team, the role also requires independent work.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in higher education
  • Basic knowledge of AV signal flow
  • Experience with various web‑conferencing and lecture capture applications
  • Ability to operate comfortably in high‑stress environments
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a team and independently to achieve goals
  • Experience with use and programming of Crestron and QSC components
  • Industry certifications preferred (e.g., Avixa – CTS, CTS‑I, CTS‑D; Crestron; QSC; other manufacturer certifications)
  • Basic IT networking experience

Overtime Status

Non‑Exempt: Eligible for overtime

Salary Information

Salary commensurate with experience up to an expected budget max of $53,702

Hours per week

40 (Shift Schedule: Monday – Thursday 1 pm to 10 pm and Friday 8 am to 5 pm)
