Job summary

The University of Maryland’s Division of Information Technology is seeking an AV Specialist who will support campus classrooms and instructional technology spaces. You will troubleshoot Crestron control systems, DSPs, and AV peripherals while helping faculty and staff optimize learning environments.

Job description

This position is available within the University of Maryland’s Division of Information Technology (DIT).

The AV Specialist works within the Academic Technology & Innovation team to drive learning innovations through institutional-wide initiatives. This individual will work directly with the campus community to support classroom technology and facilitate AV operations in formal and informal learning spaces. The AV Specialist reports to the Assistant Manager of AV Systems and Classroom Support, who assists in managing the operations and maintenance of approximately 335 instructional technology classrooms. The specialist is responsible for assisting faculty users and local department staff with instructional technology infrastructure. This position provides technical support that ensures the proper operation, maintenance, monitoring, testing and repair of complex networked AV equipment and control systems. The specialist will also be required to troubleshoot Crestron control processors, touch panels, routers, audio DSPs (Crestron and others) and Crestron peripherals to support instructional technology classrooms. The Specialist will also review requirements and design classroom AV systems, build/install new classroom AV systems, perform tests and pilot installations of viable technologies. The Specialist will produce needed documentation.

This position is considered essential and may be required to work at the normal work location or an alternative location during a major catastrophic event, weather emergency, or other operational emergency to help maintain the continuity of University services.
May be required to work evenings, nights, weekends, or different shifts for extended periods.

Physical Demands: Must be able to operate test equipment, machinery and AV equipment; use power tools; work at heights using ladders and scaffolding; and drive a motor vehicle. Must be able to perform extensive standing, driving, walking and climbing; to lift up to 50 lbs.; to manipulate up to 100 lbs. with assistance; to transport and stock assigned supplies and materials; to wear personal protective equipment. Must be able to bend, stoop and climb to reach materials (must be able to climb a ladder and to work from a lift up to twenty feet in height).

Licenses/Certifications: Must possess a valid drivers license

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Three (3) years of audio visual system experience.

Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

Knowledge of audio visual systems and equipment.

Skill in oral and written communication.

Skill in the use of Microsoft Office and Google Workspace products.

Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.

Ability to multitask while demonstrating a commitment to customer service.

Additional Job Details
Preferences:
  • Proficient with rack fabrication & wiring.
  • Strong understanding of signal flow, signal formats, & transportation protocols.
  • Crestron configuration knowledge, along with their software suite.
  • Audio DSP knowledge (QSys & Biamp).
  • Wireless microphone systems knowledge.
  • AV system commissioning knowledge
  • EDID & HDCP knowledge.
  • Networking for AVoIP, Dante, AES67, NDI, etc knowledge.
  • General Networking knowledge.
  • AVIXA CTS & other industry certifications.
  • High level of energy, drive, enthusiasm, initiative, creativity and commitment. Ability to work in a busy environment with multiple project timelines and on own initiative, be self-motivated and flexible

Additional Information:

Please note that all positions within the Division of Information Technology (DIT) have an in person component with expected time in our College Park, MD location per week. Telework is not a guaranteed work arrangement.

  • DIT will not sponsor the successful candidate for work authorization in the United States now or in the future.
  • F1 STEM OPT support is not available for this position.
Remote Work:
  • This position may be eligible for some telework, but that will be dependent on projects and needs of the project/department. There will be a regular in-office requirement.
