Job description

Job Opportunity: Equipment Operator II - Norfolk, VA

The City of Norfolk's Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking an Equipment Operator II to join our landscaping crews. This position will support Parks and Forestry Operations by maintaining 2,700 acres of turf and landscape beds regularly.

Departmental Starting Salary Range: $41,231 - $43,292

Essential Functions:

1. Maintain grounds and right of ways by collecting and delivering trash containers, mowing grass, raking leaves, digging holes, planting, pruning, maintaining trees and flower beds, applying chemicals, loading and applying mulch, weed eating, trimming, grading athletic fields, installing turf, removing trees and stumps, identifying plants, cleaning job sites, hauling topsoil, grading, snow removal, aerating lawns, trimming trees, removing storm debris, weeds, litter, and debris from vacant lots.
2. Perform safety checks and minor maintenance on equipment, including checking fluids, changing blades, and conducting daily inspections to ensure safety.
3. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalent.
• Two years of experience operating machinery for grounds maintenance and horticulture.
• Valid Virginia Driver's License.

Preferred Experience and Certifications:

• Two years' experience operating grounds maintenance machinery.
• Ability to obtain Virginia Pesticide License within 6 months.
• Possibility of requiring a Commercial Driver License.

Work Details:

Location: 2839 Dana Street, Norfolk, VA 23509

Hours: 4-day work week at 40 hours/week, with seasonal variations.

Additional Benefits:

This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus, payable in two installments: $2,500 after 60 days of employment and $2,500 after probation. Bonus eligibility requires active employment in good standing.
