Job description

Job Title: Equipment Operator III - Wastewater Division

The City of Norfolk's Department of Utilities is seeking qualified applicants for an Equipment Operator III position in our Wastewater Division. The role involves operating various types of equipment, transporting crew and materials, and performing routine vehicle maintenance. Essential functions include:

  1. Operating construction and wastewater maintenance equipment such as backhoes, jet/vactor cleaners, trenchers, and dump trucks.
  2. Transporting heavy equipment, supplies, and materials to job sites.
  3. Performing safety checks, maintenance, and minor repairs on equipment and tools.
  4. Assisting with loading/unloading materials, job site tasks, and maintaining clean equipment and work areas.
  5. Lifting up to 75 lbs., and performing physical activities such as climbing, standing, pulling, and bending throughout the workday.

The position requires knowledge of operational, technical, or office processes, generally equivalent to four years of high school education or its equivalent. Candidates should have at least two years of experience as an Equipment Operator, with underground utility system experience highly preferred.

Requirements include a valid driver's license and a CDL. A Tanker Endorsement may be required within six months of hire, depending on the assignment. The ideal candidate will possess a Class A Commercial Driver's License. Pre-employment equipment operation testing may be conducted.

Work Details
  • Work Hours: Monday through Friday, 3:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. (10% shift differential pay applicable)
  • Work Location: Combined Operations Center, 1316 Ballentine Blvd., Norfolk
  • Additional Benefits: $5,000 signing bonus, and the position is classified as 'Essential', requiring availability for extended hours, on-call duties, nights, weekends, and holidays in emergencies or severe weather.
