Job Description

Performs specialized skilled work in the operation of one or more types of motorized heavy equipment used in maintenance and construction operations for the Grounds Maintenance and Construction Division. Operates a variety of heavy and medium equipment, including dump trucks, farm tractors, and backhoes, to dig trenches, spread dirt and gravel, haul dirt and debris, and cut grass and weeds. Responsible for performing minor preventive maintenance on all assigned equipment.

Qualifications:

1. High school graduate or equivalent, with 1 to 2 years of experience in operating heavy motorized equipment or a combination of training and experience.
2. Possession of a Class A Commercial Driver's License issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia with a good driving record (mandatory).
3. Certification as a State Category 60 Registered Technician for pesticide application required or willingness to obtain certification within 6 months of employment.
4. Safety shoes required.
5. Must pass an acceptable criminal background check.

Work Environment & Requirements:

• Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions, with exposure to hazards associated with outside maintenance and construction work.
• This position is considered an Essential Position (County designation as ALPHA), requiring the employee to report during inclement and extreme weather conditions, outside normal hours, or as notified by a supervisor.
• DMV records and criminal background checks are conducted prior to employment.

Physical Requirements:

Must be physically capable of operating various machinery and equipment, including tractors, front-end loaders, excavators, compactors, bulldozers, etc., and hand tools such as shovels, wrenches, carpentry tools, laser and grade rods, torches, etc. Must be able to lift between 50 and 75 pounds, and able to stand, bend, and stoop during construction or maintenance work.
