City of Norfolk - Equipment Operator III (Water Distribution Division)

The City of Norfolk's Department of Utilities is seeking qualified applicants for an Equipment Operator III position in our Water Distribution Division. The person in this role will be responsible for operating various types of equipment, transporting crew and materials, and performing routine maintenance on vehicles.

Essential Functions:

1. Operate construction and system maintenance equipment such as backhoes, excavators, trenchers, and dump trucks.
2. Transport heavy equipment, supplies, and materials to job sites.
3. Perform safety checks, maintenance, and minor repairs on equipment and tools.
4. Assist with loading/unloading materials, job site tasks, and maintaining clean equipment and work areas.
5. Lift up to 75 lbs., and perform physical activities such as climbing, standing, pulling, and bending throughout the workday.
6. Assist other workers as needed.

Qualifications:

• Knowledge equivalent to four years of high school education or GED.
• Minimum of two years experience as an Equipment Operator; underground utility system experience highly preferred.
• Valid driver's license; a valid CDL Driver's License with Tanker Endorsement is preferred. Certification in Sprayer Technician or CPR may be required.
• Possession of a Class A CDL is highly desirable.

Additional Requirements:

• Pre-employment testing on backhoe operation may be required.
• Work location: Combined Operations at 1316 Ballentine Blvd.
• Work hours: Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
• This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus.
• As an 'Essential' position, extended hours, rotating shifts, on-call duties, nights, weekends, and holidays may be required in response to emergencies or severe weather.
