Description of Work

DEQ has an open opportunity for an Environmental Specialist I. This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits. The position is for multiple vacancies: 65005881 and 60034766.

This role is home-based and will be located within 25 miles of specific counties:

• Position #60034766: Wayne, Duplin, Sampson, Harnett, and the Northern portion of Cumberland.
• Position #65005881: Stokes, Forsyth, and the Eastern portion of Rockingham.

The inspector will work remotely with provided equipment and transportation. The position is within the Underground Storage Tank section, inspecting UST facilities for compliance, responding to citizen reports, providing information, and conducting community outreach.

Key Responsibilities

1. Conduct routine compliance and installation inspections of UST facilities.
2. Respond to reports of abandoned USTs and suspected releases.
3. Provide information about UST rules and requirements.
4. Gather and compile inspection reports on leak causes and prevention methods.
5. Make oral presentations for community outreach and training.

Division and Department Overview

The Division of Waste Management aims to protect public health and the environment through proper waste and tank management and contamination cleanup. The NC DEQ oversees environmental resources, ensuring quality of life for North Carolinians.

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in environmental, biological, engineering, or related sciences, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Ability to apply environmental concepts, organize research, and communicate technical information.
