Job description

GAI Consultants is seeking an Environmental Specialist with experience in Field Compliance Monitoring to be based out of our Warrenton, VA office, within our Energy Business Unit. This position is fully remote but will require travel to various project sites. Applicants should enjoy working in a challenging, fast-paced, and team-oriented environment. This position offers an excellent opportunity to expand knowledge in federal and state environmental regulations, primarily in Pennsylvania, with opportunities in West Virginia, Maryland, and Virginia.


The successful candidate will serve as a field lead, performing various assignments with minimal supervision, including:


  1. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  2. Perform field monitoring of erosion and sediment controls on construction projects, working independently.
  3. Review specifications, permits, and permit conditions, along with E&S control and stormwater plans.
  4. Prepare and review monitoring reports based on field observations, submitted in paper or electronic formats.
  5. Assist with environmental reports, permit applications, and closeout requests, including wetland and stream delineation reports and erosion control plans.
  6. Adhere to Health and Safety requirements of GAI and its clients.
  7. Maintain QA/QC standards and follow GAI's Quality Management System procedures.

Qualifications


Required:


  1. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including technical writing.
  2. Proficiency with GPS or GPS-enabled devices for data collection.
  3. Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Office applications; familiar with report and database management.
  4. Valid driver’s license and ability to pass screening to drive GAI vehicles.
  5. Flexibility and willingness to travel, including overnight stays and driving long distances.

Preferred:


  1. Associates degree or higher in environmental or related sciences.
  2. Two to four years of field monitoring experience, especially in E&S control.
  3. Experience with Environmental Due Diligence (Phase I ESAs).
  4. Knowledge of NPDES regulations, BMP designs, and environmental agency guidelines.
  5. Experience with AutoCAD, GIS, and environmental compliance planning.
  6. Certifications such as Qualified Environmental Inspector or Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector.

Physical Demands and Other Job Information:


  1. Ability to walk in remote and unimproved terrains.
  2. Lift up to 50 pounds.
  3. Visual and auditory awareness of hazards during fieldwork.
  4. Pass drug screening upon employment.

Additional Characteristics:


  • Demonstrates critical thinking, works on small or parts of larger projects, and supports project quality.

Experience and Education:


  • Minimum 4+ years of relevant experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Sciences or similar field.

Technical Responsibilities:


  • Leading field studies, data collection, and document generation.
  • Researching applicable regulations and applying them to projects.
  • Specialization in wetland delineations, restoration, surveys, and endangered species compliance.

Project and Management:


  • Team collaboration, scheduling, and budget management assistance.
  • Supporting proposal and scope development.

Communication Skills:


  • Effective oral and written communication, client interaction, and coordination with project teams.
