GAI Consultants is seeking an Environmental Specialist with experience in Field Compliance Monitoring within our Energy Business Unit. This position is fully remote but will require travel to various project sites. Applicants should enjoy working in a challenging, fast-paced, and team-oriented environment. This position offers an excellent opportunity to expand knowledge in federal and state environmental regulations and methodologies, primarily in Pennsylvania, with opportunities in West Virginia, Maryland, and Virginia.
The successful candidate will serve as a field lead to perform, with minimal supervision, various assignments including, but not limited to:
- Performing field monitoring of erosion and sediment (E&S) controls on various types of construction projects (linear and site-based) independently.
- Reviewing and understanding specifications, permits, permit conditions, E&S control, and stormwater plans related to construction projects.
- Preparing and reviewing periodic monitoring reports based on field observations, submitted in paper or electronic formats.
- Assisting in preparing environmental reports, permit applications, and closeout requests such as wetland and stream delineation reports, erosion and sediment control plans, and sound studies.
- Adhering to the Health and Safety requirements of GAI Consultants and clients.
- Maintaining QA/QC standards and following GAI’s Quality Management System and client procedures.
Qualifications
Required:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and technical writing ability.
- Proficiency in electronic location devices like GPS for data collection.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and MS Office; familiar with report, database, and form completion through MS Word, Access, SQL, and online programs.
- A valid driver’s license and ability to pass screening to drive a GAI vehicle.
- Flexibility for travel, including overnight stays, with trips potentially 4-6+ hours round trip.
Preferred:
- Associate’s degree in engineering, environmental science, or related field.
- Two to four years of field monitoring experience, especially in E&S control.
- Experience in Environmental Due Diligence (Phase I ESAs).
- Knowledge of NPDES regulations, BMP designs, and environmental agency guidelines.
- Experience working with environmental review agencies.
- Experience with SWPPP, NPDES permit applications, and erosion and sediment control plans.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and GIS (ArcGIS).
- Knowledge of Section 401/404 permitting, stream and wetland surveys, and delineation techniques.
- Certifications such as Qualified Environmental Inspector (PA), Responsible Person for Erosion and Sediment Control (MD), Qualified Personnel (VA), among others.
Physical Demands and Other Information:
- Walking moderate distances in various terrains.
- Lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to identify hazards during fieldwork.
- Pass a drug screening upon employment.

Experience and Education:
- Minimum 4+ years of relevant experience.
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Sciences or similar field.
Technical Responsibilities include:
- Leading field studies, data collection, and document preparation.
- Researching environmental regulations and applying them to projects.
- Specializing in wetland delineations, restoration, ecological surveys, and endangered species consultations.
Project and Management Responsibilities:
- Team collaboration, scheduling, and budgeting assistance.
Communication Skills:
- Effective oral and written communication, client interaction, and team coordination.
