Job description

GAI Consultants is seeking an Environmental Specialist with experience in Field Compliance Monitoring to be based out of our Warrenton, VA office, within our Energy Business Unit. This position is fully remote but will require travel to various project sites. Applicants should enjoy working in a challenging, fast-paced, and team-oriented environment. This position offers an excellent opportunity to expand knowledge in federal and state environmental regulations, primarily in Pennsylvania, with opportunities in West Virginia, Maryland, and Virginia.

The successful candidate will serve as a field lead, performing various assignments with minimal supervision, including:

1. Performing field monitoring of erosion and sediment (E&S) controls on construction projects, working independently.
2. Reviewing specifications, permits, permit conditions, and E&S control and stormwater plans related to construction projects.
3. Preparing and reviewing periodic monitoring reports based on field observations, submitted in paper or electronic formats.
4. Assisting in preparing environmental reports, permit applications, and closeout requests, such as wetland and stream delineation reports, erosion and sediment control plans, and sound studies.
5. Adhering to Health and Safety requirements of GAI Consultants and clients.
6. Maintaining QA/QC standards and following GAI’s Quality Management System procedures.

Qualifications

Required:

• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, including technical writing.
• Proficiency with electronic location devices like GPS for data collection.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Office applications, with experience in report and database completion.
• A valid driver’s license and ability to pass screening to drive a GAI vehicle.
• Flexibility and willingness to travel, including overnight stays, with travel expected up to 75% of the time.

Preferred:

• Associate’s degree in engineering, environmental science, or related field.
• 2-4 years of field monitoring experience, particularly in E&S control.
• Experience with Environmental Due Diligence (Phase I ESAs), NPDES regulations, and BMP design and maintenance.
• Knowledge of AutoCAD and GIS (ArcGIS).
• Certifications such as Qualified Environmental Inspector, Responsible Person for Erosion and Sediment Control, or equivalent.

Physical Demands:

• Ability to walk through unimproved terrain, lift up to 50 pounds, and observe potential hazards.

Candidates must pass a drug screening. The role involves critical thinking, project assistance, and coordination with team members. Minimum of 4+ years of experience and a bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences or similar are required.
