Job summary

Flock Freight is hiring an Engineering Manager to lead a Product Engineering team responsible for shipper and carrier applications. You will guide a seven-engineer team, share architectural insights, and partner with Product, Design, and Operations to deliver scalable software that powers the freight experience.

The role emphasizes coaching, development, and process improvements, with responsibilities spanning roadmap alignment, on-call health, and hiring.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience with senior-level technical leadership
• 1–2+ years of demonstrated people leadership experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent practical experience
• Passion for developing engineers at different career stages with collaboration and continuous learning
• Proven ability to navigate team conflict and implement process improvements
• Strong project-management skills and ability to define MVPs with Product
• Experience in backend and web app development with Java/Spring and modern frontend tech
• Ability to guide architectural decisions while focusing on people leadership
• Experience partnering with Product and non-technical stakeholders to set priorities and scope
• Experience hiring, training, and developing engineers at multiple levels

Responsibilities

• Lead and develop an established team of seven engineers, including Staff-level leaders, through coaching, feedback, and career development
• Own engineering execution and delivery, translating business priorities into milestones with Product
• Partner with Product, Design, and Operations to translate goals into a clear technical roadmap
• Provide technical leadership by guiding architectural discussions and tradeoffs
• Maintain production health with on-call practices, incident response, and observability
• Improve testing, CI/CD, documentation, and development tools for engineering effectiveness
• Support hiring and onboarding as the team grows
• Address team conflict and performance concerns with clarity and fairness
• Balance new product work with technical debt and reliability investments
• Define and track measures of team success and communicate progress
• Communicate so teams understand goals, priorities, and outcomes
• Strengthen engineering culture, operating practices, and standards across teams
