An EMT-B assesses the nature and extent of illness or injury, administers basic medical care and first aid, and transports patients to medical facilities. They work as part of an emergency medical team, ensuring safe transport, communicating vital patient information, and assisting at scenes of accidents or catastrophes. They may also support professional medical personnel in emergency treatments at medical facilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Perform duties of an EMT in a safe, dignified, and compassionate manner, including but not limited to:

  • Follow regulations, laws, and standards per Ohio State EMS, Fire, and Transport, and Community Care Ambulance policies.
  • Understand hospital locations, access procedures, and protocols.
  • Respond to emergency and non-emergency requests efficiently and calmly.
  • Administer Basic Life Support (BLS) and assess patient condition to prioritize care.
  • Communicate effectively with medical professionals for further treatment instructions.
  • Maintain scene safety, manage crowd disturbances, and protect valuables.
  • Drive emergency vehicles safely, adhering to traffic laws and policies.
  • Support a culture of safety and continuous competency in skills and knowledge.
  • Complete all documentation accurately and timely.
  • Follow safety and infection control policies, including blood-borne pathogens and HAZMAT procedures.
  • Educate and train EMS personnel, trainees, and the public.
  • Attend mandatory training sessions and educational offerings, including Medical Director courses.
  • Participate in Quality Assurance and safety improvement initiatives.
  • Use radio communication professionally and respond promptly to dispatch instructions.
  • Ensure vehicles and equipment are maintained, disinfected, stocked, and in proper working order.
  • Complete patient documentation before shift end and maintain certifications as required by Ohio EMS authorities.
Qualifications

Education and/or Experience:

  • Current Ohio State EMT, AEMT, or NREMT certification.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Valid Ohio State Driver’s license and meet insurance requirements.
  • State of Ohio Personal Vehicle Insurance.
  • Emergency Vehicle Operator Certification (EVOC).
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Maintain all certifications and licenses required for this role throughout employment.
