Job summary

Powhatan County Public Schools' Flat Rock Elementary School in Virginia is seeking an Instructional Assistant (Special Education) for the 2026-2027 school year. This non-exempt classified position supports students with disabilities (ages 2-22 depending on assignment) to meet IEP goals and access the general education curriculum.

Under the supervision of teachers, you will reinforce material, assist with daily activities and transport students as needed, and participate in staff development.

Qualifications

• Must meet the VDOE Definition of Highly Qualified by possessing one of the listed credentials.
• Paraprofessionals/instructional assistants working with students with autism must complete the autism competencies training within 60 days of assignment.
• Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
• Ability to write simple correspondence and effectively present information one-on-one and in groups.

Responsibilities

• Under the supervision of the special education or general education teacher, reinforce material initially introduced by the teacher using educational technology.
• Foster an environment of mutual respect, independence and protection of students’ dignity.
• Assist students with physical tasks such as dressing, mobility, personal hygiene, toileting, feeding and lifting.
• Accompany students to and from the bus, on field trips, during community-based instruction, and at lunch, resources and recess.
• Early childhood special education assistants may ride the bus to assist students during transit to/from school.
• Under teacher supervision, implement classroom and individual behavior plans.
• Perform requested clerical duties as directed by the teacher.
• Maintain confidentiality of student information and records.
• Attend staff development sessions as required.
• Disability-specific duties may be assigned by supervising teacher.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee.
