Job summary

Volunteers of America Chesapeake & Carolinas is seeking a Direct Support Professional in Woodbridge, VA. The role involves providing direct care and supporting individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities in their homes under supervision.

The DSP will assist with daily living skills, medication support, and community integration while following PCP plans and organizational policies. Strong communication, documentation, and problem-solving are essential.

Qualifications

• Requires a high school diploma, GED, and/or IEP.
• 1 year of experience in the field of intellectual/developmental disabilities; exceptions may be made for less experience with enhanced supervision.
• Medication Administration Certification is preferred, but may be required by end of introductory period.
• Must pass required trainings and orientation; maintain certifications per CMS or relevant entities.
• Computer skills are required for documentation; clear written and verbal communication.
• Problem solving ability; background checks and drug testing; bilingualism is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Provides supports identified by the Person-Centered Planning Team.
• Coordinates with families, planning team, day program, and other service providers.
• Teaches and assists with household tasks and planning budgets.
• Assists people to develop skills in daily living following the Person-Centered Plan.
• Monitors medication administration and supports learning to self-administer where appropriate.
• May perform crisis intervention and first aid or CPR as needed.
• Plans and participates in social activities; participates in assessments and planning team.
• Transports people and/or provides mobility training to attend appointments and events.
• Documents all services in the electronic case management system daily.
• Works cooperatively with the support team and attends required staff meetings and trainings.
• Repairs and maintains home safety as directed; ensures sanitation and security.
