Job summary

VEG ER for Pets in Asheville, NC seeks a per diem Emergency Veterinary Assistant to join the heart of the action, supporting the team, comforting pet parents, and learning on the job.

You'll triage, assist with treatments, monitor anesthesia with credentialed staff, manage IV fluids, and participate in rounds. Training paths and growth opportunities are available, with nights, weekends, and holidays rotation.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Enrolled in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology program a plus.
• 1+ years in a veterinary assistant role (emergency or specialty experience is a bonus).
• Basic computer skills and understanding of practice management software and EMR.
• Excellent communicator with pet parents and team.
• Fine motor skills for handling patients and medical equipment.
• Ability to lift up to 25 kg alone and up to 40 kg with assistance.
• Willingness to work in a noisy environment with odors.
• Night, weekend, and holiday availability on rotating basis.

Responsibilities

• Be the first warm welcome and triage incoming patients.
• Assist with treatments, nursing care, and diagnostics including bloodwork and imaging.
• Set up and monitor anesthesia and sedation with credentialed staff.
• Manage IV fluids, transfusions, and medication administration.
• Support in outpatient or inpatient care and treatment areas.
• Join patient rounds to ensure continuity of care.
• Learn CPR and RECOVER Certification (training provided).
• Grow into advanced responsibilities through guided training.
