Job summary

County Emergency Communications seeks Emergency Medical Dispatchers to handle urgent medical calls, verify locations, and coordinate ambulance resources. You will follow approved protocols and provide pre-arrival instructions as required.

The role requires a high school diploma (GED acceptable) and may require EMT/paramedic credentials or EMS certification, depending on the vacancy. Training and overtime may be involved.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or recognized equivalent required.
• Emergency Medical Dispatcher certification may be required before appointment.
• CPR certification and additional coursework may be required. EMT or paramedic credentials are not universal requirements; consult vacancy.

Responsibilities

• Receive calls involving illness, injury, and other medical emergencies.
• Confirm patient location, callback number, and access details.
• Ask approved questions about patient’s condition.
• Determine response priority through the dispatcher system.
• Dispatch or coordinate ambulance resources as assigned.
• Provide protocol-based instructions within current qualifications.
• Relay patient information and scene hazards to responders.
• Document call processing and participate in quality-review activities.
