Job summary

American Electric Power in Decatur, Indiana, is seeking a Line Mechanic C to perform installation, maintenance and inspection of transmission and distribution facilities, both overhead and underground. The role builds on Line Mechanic D skills.

Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED and meet the Line Mechanic-C/B/A experience criteria; a valid Class A CDL is required. Overtime, travel, and progression to higher classifications are expected.

Qualifications

• HS diploma or GED required.
• Line Mechanic-C: 1 year distribution electrical power line experience or equivalent education.
• Line Mechanic-B: 2 years as Line Mechanic C or equivalent.
• Line Mechanic-A: Apprenticeship lineman training with B-200 certification.
• External candidates: minimum 4 years line work and journeyman pre-assessment.
• Valid Class A CDL required.

Responsibilities

• Assemble, install, maintain, remove and inspect overhead and underground facilities including conductors, cables, transformers and structures.
• After C-100, able to work on conductors and equipment energized up to 260 volts.
• Assist with work on conductors and equipment energized up to 600 volts under supervision.
• After C-100/C-200, test, de-energize and ground URD cable and troubleshoot URD equipment.
• After C-200, capable of working on conductors and equipment energized up to 600 volts under supervision.
• Use volt meters, amp meters, ground megger, continuity testers and related test equipment up to 600 volts.
• Build and erect equipment mountings and transformer installations.
• Tag switching procedures for energized circuits and perform inspections.
• Direct the work of employees assigned to assist; complete Monthly Apprentice Cards.
• Overtime and on-call may be required; travel may be required; live within 45-minute drive of service center.

Education

High school diploma or GED

Line Mechanic-C Experience: Minimum of one year distribution electrical power line work experience, OR one year of related line experience defined as: successful completion of a one-year electrical power line school certificate plus a minimum of 16 weeks internship or distribution electrical power line experience, or an associate degree from an electrical power line school which includes a minimum of 16 weeks internship or distribution electrical power line experience.

Line Mechanic-B Experience: Minimum of 2 years of work experience as Line Mechanic C or the equivalent experience as determined by the Company.

Line Mechanic-A Experience: Successful completion of apprentice lineman training, including B-200 certification written test with a score of 80% or higher and successful completion of hands‑on comprehensive demonstrations.

External candidates must have a minimum of 4 years’ line work experience and successful completion of the journeyman pre-assessment.
