Job summary

American Electric Power (AEP) seeks a skilled Line Mechanic to install, maintain and troubleshoot overhead and underground electrical facilities, with progression through C-100 to C-400 levels under supervision. Responsibilities include using test equipment, building transformer structures, tagging, switching, and leading assigned crew members.

Must live within 45 minutes of the service center and hold a valid Class A CDL; overtime and on-call work required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Line Mechanic experience: 1 year distribution electrical power line work or equivalent; 16 weeks internship or related experience.
• Line Mechanic B: 2 years of work experience as Line Mechanic C or equivalent.
• Line Mechanic A: apprentice lineman training with B-200 certification and 4+ years line work; journeyman pre-assessment for external candidates.

Responsibilities

• Assemble, install, maintain, remove and inspect overhead and underground facilities including conductors, cables, transformers and fixtures.
• Work on energized conductors and equipment up to 260V under supervision after C-100.
• Assist with work on conductors energized up to 600V under supervision.
• Test, de-energize and ground URD cable after C-100; troubleshoot and energize URD cables.
• Cover equipment up to 600V after C-200 under supervision; use volt meters and related test equipment.
• Build equipment mountings and overhead transformer installations.
• Conduct proper tagging during switching of energized circuits.
• Direct the work of employees assigned to assist; complete Monthly Apprentice Cards.
