As we expand into executive and team-level search, we’re building a specialized business development team to help scale this offering with integrity and impact.
Position Summary
We’re looking for a dynamic, relationally-driven Director of Business Development to lead outreach and deal flow for our new Executive Search practice. In this commission-based role, you’ll identify potential clients, cultivate relationships with nonprofit leaders and boards, and close retained search engagements.
You’ll represent a growing firm with a strong reputation—and help shape a search service that’s relational, mission-aligned, and built to last.
Key Responsibilities
• Identify and cultivate new client relationships for retained executive and team-level searches
• Engage nonprofit leaders, board members, and funders through email, phone, LinkedIn, and in-person networking
• Manage full business development cycle from prospecting to signed agreement
• Represent Onyx at sector events, conferences, and speaking opportunities (as appropriate)
Strategic Positioning
• Collaborate with the Founder on messaging, outreach materials, and referral strategies
• Maintain detailed tracking of outreach, pipeline status, and signed engagements
• Identify trends, feedback, and opportunities to refine our offering
Ideal Candidate Will Have:
• 5+ years of experience in business development, sales, executive search, or nonprofit consulting
• Strong knowledge of or network within the nonprofit/philanthropic sector
• Exceptional relationship-building and listening skills
• A self-starter mindset with the ability to work independently
• Comfort talking to executive leaders and boards with poise and professionalism
• Experience closing 5- or 6-figure service contracts preferred
Compensation
This is a commission-only role with no cap on earnings.
• 20% commission on each retained executive search engagement you close
• Estimated earnings range from $40,000–$120,000+ annually based on volume
• Flexible hours, remote-friendly, and performance-based autonomy
• Opportunity to grow into a senior role or full-time position as the practice expands
