Xcel Energy Inc. is offering an engineering internship focused on Monticello Design Engineering and Capital Projects. The role involves safety improvements, on-site engineering tasks, and enhancing reporting tools with AI integration.

The internship runs with a May 24, 2027 start date, with potential extension based on performance. Travel to downtown facilities and Prairie Island may be required. Ideal candidates are electrical, mechanical, or civil engineering students who can work full-time in

Qualifications

• Current student, Sophomore or higher.
• Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in electrical, mechanical or civil engineering.
• Occasional travel to meet with engineers & interns at downtown facilities, and sister plant (Prairie Island).
• Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week) and part-time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week) and commute to the designated work location in-person per hybrid policy.

Responsibilities

• Work on industrial safety improvement items - shaft guards for rotating machinery, platforms, and other industrial safety engineering requests.
• Work on site engineering document change backlog
• Improve reporting tools used by site engineers and integration of AI tools into design engineering activities.
• Support early screening of outage modifications.
• Engage in site troubleshooting and decision‑making by researching operating experience
• Research replacements for obsolete equipment
• Update site calculations.
• Update lifecycle management documents
• Endeavor software implementation.
