SUMMARY

The Dental Assistant (DA) is responsible for assisting dental providers in delivering high-quality patient care by performing clinical, laboratory, and office duties. The DA assists with patient handling, organizes instruments and materials, performs infection control and sterilization duties, takes radiographic and intraoral images, and performs tasks permitted by the Dental Board of California.

RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Follow protective protocols to ensure health and safety for yourself, patients, and coworkers.
  • Be familiar with dental terminology, instruments, materials, and supplies used during procedures.
  • Prepare dental operatories by setting up necessary materials and supplies.
  • Document exam findings and patient information in the electronic health record.
  • Take diagnostic-quality radiographic and intra-/extra-oral images and store them accurately.
  • Perform four-handed chairside assisting during all phases of dentistry.
  • Provide dental education to patients under the supervision of the dentist.
  • Perform duties permitted by the Dental Board of California.
  • Implement infection control by cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilizing after procedures.
  • Pour models and conduct other lab duties.
  • Manage inventory and reorder supplies as needed.
  • Maintain and test all instruments and equipment.
  • Perform front desk duties such as scheduling and referrals.
  • Assist with billing, insurance, and payment processing.
  • Willing to work nights and weekends as assigned.
  • Work in various community settings, including school-based sites, mobile vans, and health fairs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

SECONDARY JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Greet and register clients, patients, and visitors professionally.
  • Review, update, and process patient registration forms.
  • Complete funding program assessments and refer patients accordingly.
  • Verify insurance eligibility and collect co-pays or shared costs.
  • Answer patient inquiries in person or by phone, within practice policies.
  • Create new patient records in EMR (eClinical Works).
  • Review and organize medical and dental records daily.
  • Manage alerts in patient records and send correspondence as directed.
  • Assist with program applications and maintain supply packets.
  • Maintain office policies, procedures, and a clean environment.
  • Arrive on time, prepared to work, and avoid misuse of sick time.
  • Assist with opening and closing the clinic as directed.

ENVIRONMENT

The position is based in a clean, comfortable medical clinic environment, with potential minor nuisances such as noise or odors. It is a non-confined, office-like setting with freedom of movement.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

While performing this work, the incumbent:

  • Will spend substantial time standing, sitting, speaking, and listening.
  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally up to 25 pounds.
  • Will frequently travel via personal vehicle throughout the community.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Current BLS CPR Certification.
  • Radiation Safety Certification or completion of an approved course.
  • Familiarity with dental terminology, materials, and instruments.
  • Skills to perform duties as per California licensing guidelines.
  • Bilingual in Spanish is recommended.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Individuals must pass a physical exam, drug screening, and background check. Vaccinations and preventative testing (Hep B, Influenza, MMR, TDAP, TB, Covid-19) are recommended.
