Summary

This position is located within the Dept. of Veterans Affairs at the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville, NC, under the Dental Service. The Dental Assistant performs a higher level of scope, complexity, and variety of dental assisting duties, representing the clinical assignment and applying advanced clinical skills. Performs the full range of duties for routine patient care with indirect supervision from the Supervisory Dental Assistant or the treating dentist.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• English Language Proficiency
• Experience and Education: 1 year at the GS-06 Level demonstrating ability or familiarity with the work, or successful completion of an accredited 1-year dental assistant program, or equivalent combinations of experience and education.
• Certification: Must meet radiologic procedures credentialing standards as per 42 CFR Part 75 and be certified as radiographers. Certification in basic life support is highly desirable. Certification by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) is preferred.

Grade Determination GS-7:

• At least 1 year of experience at the previous grade or equivalent demonstrating core competencies.
• Technical KSAs include the ability to perform dental assisting expanded functions, advanced imaging techniques, and other specialized procedures.

Physical Requirements: Long periods of standing, walking, sitting, bending, pushing, use of both hands, lifting (up to 45 lbs), reaching, visual and auditory requirements.

Duties

Perform a higher level of dental assisting duties, applying advanced clinical skills, including routine patient care, expanded function procedures, and specialty procedures. Maintain current DANB certification, assist with various dental procedures, perform imaging, infection control, clerical functions, and other duties as assigned. Work schedule: 4 days/week, 10 hours per day, with alternating schedules.
