Job description

Summary

This position is located within the Dept. of Veterans Affairs at the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville, NC, under the Dental Service. The Dental Assistant performs a higher scope and complexity of dental assisting duties, applying advanced clinical skills. They perform a full range of routine patient care duties with indirect supervision from the Supervisory Dental Assistant or the treating dentist.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

• U.S. Citizenship (non-citizens only if qualified citizens are unavailable)
• Proficiency in English (spoken and written)
• Experience: 1 year at the GS-06 level or equivalent, or
• Education: Completion of a 1-year CODA-accredited dental assistant program, or
• Combination of experience and education
• Certification in radiologic procedures per 42 CFR Part 75 and DANB certification

Grade Determination GS-7

At this level, the Dental Assistant serves as a Clinical Expanded Function Dental Assistant or Lead Dental Assistant. They demonstrate knowledge and skills in performing expanded functions, advanced imaging techniques, and possess at least 1 year of experience at the GS-6 level or equivalent. Responsibilities include performing complex procedures independently, assisting in various dental specialties, and maintaining current DANB certification.

Physical Requirements

Long periods of standing, walking, sitting, bending, and pushing; use of both hands; lifting (up to 45 lbs); reaching; visual and auditory acuity; mental alertness.

Duties

• Perform higher-level dental assisting duties with advanced clinical skills
• Assist in routine and complex patient procedures
• Perform expanded functions independently, including diagnostic and preparatory procedures
• Maintain certifications and perform imaging and infection control procedures
• Provide excellent patient service and support dental team operations
• Work schedule: 4 days of 10 hours each, alternating weekly schedules
