Job summary

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) seeks a Computational Mechanics Engineer to model static and dynamic events across defense programs. You will build multi-physics simulations, select from Abaqus, ANSYS, LS-DYNA, NASTRAN, Fluent, and other tools, and collaborate with engineers, designers, and scientists to translate models into real-world results.

You will contribute to projects spanning submarines, ships, UAVs, missiles, and spacecraft, with opportunities to advance your analytical

Qualifications

  • Degree in mechanical/aerospace/physics or applied mathematics with demonstrated application.
  • Experience in finite element analysis or related computational modeling.
  • Interest in defense-related projects including energetics, munitions, blast, and impact.
  • Programming ability in MATLAB, C/C++, Python, or FORTRAN.
  • Ability to work both independently and in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally and obtain a security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Build models for static and dynamic events: blast, impact, and structural analysis.
  • Leverage Abaqus, ABSTRAO, ALE3D, ANSYS, LS-DYNA, NASTRAN, and related tools.
  • Collaborate with engineers, designers, and scientists across projects.
  • Propose new projects and initiatives with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Craft reports and present results to team members and government partners.
