Job summary

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Maryland, seeks engineers and scientists who enjoy solving challenging defense problems through physics-based modeling and simulation. You will study aerospace and missile systems to understand performance, capabilities, and vulnerabilities, and you will integrate across engineering disciplines to deliver system-level insights.

Candidates should have a technical degree and experience with MATLAB, Python, C/C++, or similar,

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, or related technical field
  • Experience with programming or computational languages such as MATLAB, Python, C/C++, Java, Rust, or similar
  • Strong analytical and quantitative problem-solving skills
  • Ability to communicate technical ideas effectively in written and verbal form
  • Ability to obtain interim Secret clearance by start date and ultimately obtain Secret clearance

Responsibilities

  • Develop and use physics-based simulations to understand performance of aerospace and missile systems
  • Analyze missiles, autonomous aerial systems, and related technologies to understand capabilities and limitations
  • Use engineering analysis, modeling, simulation, software, and data to answer questions about system performance
  • Compare simulations with data and improve quality of products
  • Communicate results to teammates, leaders, and sponsors
  • Collaborate across teams to connect work into a system-level understanding
  • Participate in reviews, experiments, and test events connecting analytics to real-world problems
