The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is seeking engineers and scientists to tackle defense challenges in aerospace systems. You will apply physics-based modeling and data-driven methods to simulate missile performance, analyze diverse systems, and connect analytical work to real-world engineering problems.

Candidates bring degrees in relevant fields and strong programming experience (MATLAB, Python, C/C++, Java, Rust) with a clear ability to communicate results.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's in aerospace, mechanical, electrical engineering, CS, mathematics or physics.
  • Experience with MATLAB, Python, C/C++, Java, Rust, or similar.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative problem-solving skills.
  • Able to communicate technical ideas effectively in written and verbal form.
  • Able to collaborate with engineers and scientists from different backgrounds.
  • U.S. citizenship with eligibility for Interim Secret clearance by start date, ultimately Secret.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and use physics-based simulations to understand performance of aerospace and missile systems.
  • Analyze missiles and autonomous systems to understand capabilities and limitations.
  • Use engineering analysis, modeling, simulation, software, and data to answer questions about system performance.
  • Compare simulated predictions with data and improve quality of products.
  • Learn how systems operate to identify performance characteristics, limitations, and vulnerabilities.
  • Analyze how emerging defense technologies could perform against threats.
  • Help develop and evaluate concepts for defending against those systems.
  • Work with team across APL to connect work into a larger system-level understanding.
  • Clearly communicate technical results, assumptions, uncertainties, and conclusions to teammates, leaders, programs, sponsors.
  • Participate in reviews, experiments, test events, and other activities linked to real-world engineering problems.
