Deckhand – AB Certified (4125)

Stevens Towing Company is seeking a Deckhand (AB Certified) to support vessel operations in Charleston, SC.

Position requirements

Active AB credentials; applicable maritime background; TWIC card; valid driver’s license; meet all U.S. Coast Guard pre‑screening requirements.

General description

Any employment relationship with STEVENS TOWING COMPANY, INC. is at‑will. The employee may resign at any time and the company may discharge the employee at any time with or without cause.

Responsibilities
  • Understand and comply with duties and responsibilities given by the Captain/Mate.
  • Learn safety rules; use safety equipment; comply with safety and pollution‑prevention regulations.
  • Maintain non‑engineering areas: clean inside/outside of the boat, scrub floors, wash windows, polish brass, paint exterior decks and bulkheads.
  • Acquire knowledge of barges in tow; handle tug’s working and mooring lines; operate towing gear; handle hawsers, cables, bridles, shock and retrieving lines as experience dictates; help maintain and operate deck equipment when docking or departing.
  • Throw heavy lines; secure large working lines quickly.
  • Check barges regularly; pump out leaking barges; set out navigation lights and check them regularly.
  • Learn and perform deckhand responsibilities for towing and rigging.
  • Cook meals and keep the galley clean.
  • Perform duties under adverse conditions (outside and occasional inside). Accept exposure to noise, fumes, dust, heat/cold, electric shock, sun glare, arc lights.
  • Wear personal protective equipment: steel‑toed shoes, work vest/ PFD, work gloves, knife, flashlight, ear muffs/ plugs, safety glasses/goggles, sunglasses, dust masks, sunscreen, COVID mask.
  • Assist the engineer when required; be helped in return.
  • Splice and care for all lines as instructed.
  • Check all life preservers are properly stowed.
Essential functions and qualifications
  • Minimum two (2) years of relevant experience as crew member and/or deckhand.
  • Active AB and Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) preferred.
  • Apply for U.S. Coast Guard seaman’s card (Merchant Mariner’s Document). Furnish photocopy and endorsements.
  • Physically able to lift, carry, and work with heavy rigging up to 100 pounds (with assistance).
  • Physical tasks include stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, standing, climbing, balancing continuously; lift and/or move 10, 25, 50 pounds regularly.
  • Compensate for adverse conditions over or near water; tight schedules.
  • Handle multiple tasks within a given day; use commonsense understanding.
  • Fully conversant with emergency procedures and lifesaving equipment aboard the vessel.
  • Maintain cleanliness: scrub toilet heads daily, shower stall weekly; empty trash daily; clean stove/oven weekly; defrost refrigerator once a week; clean freezer monthly; arrange food supplies to prevent damage; wash dishes/pans each meal; sweep interior daily.
