Job summary

Stevens Towing Company, Inc. is seeking a deckhand to join our crew on a tug. The role requires extended away-from-home periods—approximately 28 days at a time—with off-tug rest of 14 days.

This is not a traditional home-based shift; you stay aboard the tug and perform deck-related tasks. Responsibilities include maintaining deck areas, repairing lines, lashing barges, loading/unloading cargo, and standing watch to ensure safe navigation.

Qualifications

  • Maritime background required.
  • TWIC and safety certifications required (First Aid & CPR).
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the non-engineering areas of the vessel: deck cleaning, painting, rust removal.
  • Assist with loading/unloading cargo and lash barges for tow units; inspect them en route.
  • Stand watch and look out for other vessels and obstructions during docking and transit.

Job Description

Stevens Towing Company, Inc has a job opening for the position of deckhand. This position requires one to be away from home for approximately 28 days at a time and off of the tug for 14 days. This is not a position where you would come to work in the mornings and go home in the evenings. You are required to stay on the tug.

Deckhands are responsible for keeping the non-engineering areas of the vessel in good condition by performing maintenance chores, such as repairing lines, chipping rust, painting and cleaning decks, cooking, cleaning the galley, cleaning the head, and other areas. They also maintain and operate deck equipment when docking or departing along with helping load and unload cargo. Deckhands stand watch and help to look out for other vessels and obstructions.

Other responsibilities include lashing barges together into tow units, inspecting them periodically, and disconnecting them when the destination is reached.

Deckhands should expect to work twelve (12) hours in a twenty-four (24) hour period, rotating from a six (6) hour period of work to a six (6) hour period of rest. Deckhands are compensated at $200/day.

All crew members are required to participate in random drug screens as a condition of employment.

Requirements
  • Must have a maritime background and a TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Card issued by Homeland Security), First Aid & CPR certifications and a valid driver's license.
  • Required to learn safety rules and become familiar with proper usage of safety equipment. Required to comply with all Safety and Pollution Prevention Regulations and Procedures at all times under the direction of Stevens Towing Company, Inc.’s safety policies.
