Responsibilities
- Understand and execute duties and responsibilities assigned by the Captain/Mate.
- Maintain non‑engine areas: clean interior and exterior, scrub and wash floors, wash windows, polish brass equipment, paint exterior decks and bulkheads.
- Cook meals and keep the galley clean.
- Acquire knowledge of barges in tow, handle tug working lines and mooring lines, and operate towing gear (hawsers, cables, bridles, shock lines, retrieving lines).
- Throw heavy lines and secure large working lines quickly.
- Check barges, pump out leaking barges, set navigation lights, and check lights regularly.
- Regularly check masthead, stern, sidelights, anchor light, and protective fenders when landing and departure.
Qualifications
- Experience in essential functions: understand duties and responsibilities, scrub boat after each trip, secure lines, and ready vessel for sea.
- Perform cleaning tasks: sweep and mop interior, wipe bulkheads and overhead, wash dishes and kitchen items, defrost refrigerator weekly, clean freezer monthly, arrange food supplies.
- Clean and maintain toilet heads, shower stall, and shower rack weekly, empty trash daily.
- Assist the engineer as required; splice and care for all lines under Captain’s instruction.
- Apply for a U.S. Coast Guard Seamans Card and furnish required documents.
- Check life preservers, lift and carry heavy rigging, perform duties under adverse conditions and tight schedules.
