Job summary

Vane Brothers is seeking entry-level Deckhands to join the tugboat crew. The position includes an initial training period to qualify for AB endorsement, with pay guidelines listed for various deckhand levels from $291 to $425 per day.

The role involves teamwork under a captain or mate, regular two-week or three-week on/off schedules, and full benefits including health, vision, dental, and short-term disability. Final compensation may vary by experience and port location.

Qualifications

• Currently, we are looking for Deckhands with at least 6 months of maritime experience
• MMC required
• TWIC required
• Medical Certificate required
• High School Diploma preferred

Responsibilities

• Hoisting, lowering, and securing lines used aboard the vessel
• Lifting and moving heavy equipment
• Cooking and preparing meals for the crew
• Painting the deck, scrubbing the deck, and washing windows and walls inside the ship
• Following safety procedures
• Stand watch to locate navigational aids and obstructions
• Operates tow winch and vessel anchoring mechanism
• Performs stern well checks

At Vane Brothers deckhands are one of the 4 or 5 crew members aboard a tugboat whose primary responsibility is to help keep the vessel clean and seaworthy. Deckhands typically work in teams under the direction of a captain or mate assisting with the operation of the vessel. All newly hired fleet crew members must go through an evaluation or training period. The length of our program varies and is based upon qualifications, experience, and the tug captain’s approval. Deckhand training takes approximately 6 weeks. Deckhands perform any combination of the following duties aboard watercraft such as tugboats and barges.

After a period, you can attend AB School and work towards the AB endorsement. (AB) Able Bodied Seaman Responsibilities: The AB has the same responsibilities as the OS; however, the AB has more training and experience. The AB assists training the deckhand (trainee). Requirements: Sea time and rigorous training exam process.

Work schedule: Equal time – 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off or 3 weeks on,3 weeks off

Tug- Deckhand Trainee $291.00 per day

OS Deckhand $312.00 per day

AB Deckhand $357.00 per day

ATB- AB Deckhand without PIC $382.50 per day

ATB- AB Deckhand with PIC $425.00 per day

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

• Responsible for hoisting, lowering, and securing all the lines used aboard the vessel.
• Lifting and moving heavy equipment
• Cooking and preparing meals for the crew
• Performing tasks such as painting the deck, scrubbing the deck with a brush or mop, or washing windows and walls inside the ship
• Following safety procedures
• Stand watch to locate navigational aids and look for possible obstructions in the vessels path.
• Operates tow winch, controls vessels anchoring mechanism.
• Performs stern well checks.

QualificationsRequirements & Qualifications

• *Currently, we are looking for Deckhands with at least 6 months of maritime experience*
• Merchant Mariners Credential (MMC) -required.
• TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) -required.
• Medical Certificate-required
• High School Diploma (GED or Equivalence Certificate) preferred.
• Must be able to lift and carry up to 50lbs.
