Description
The AB Deckhand is directly responsible and accountable to the Captain or Relief Captain, working under their supervision and following instructions. Duties vary based on the vessel and watch. The Captain sets the watch schedule and duty list, ensuring the Deckhand performs their duties properly.
- Assisting in making/breaking the tow;
- Standing lookout or riding the head of the tow as a lookout;
- Performing tasks such as making connections, operating winches, and line handling, including splicing and throwing lines;
- Keeping decks clear and equipment properly stowed;
- Chipping and painting;
- Greasing winches and maintaining equipment;
- Assisting in the engine room when needed;
- Cleaning the boat, including personal quarters, wheelhouse, galley, heads, and companionways;
- Maintaining the barge, greasing winches, and securing hatch covers;
- Reporting hazardous conditions and making on-the-spot corrections;
- Performing hourly inspections of the engine room and bilge during duty.
Requirements
- Valid MMC with AB Unlimited, AB Limited, or AB Special Credential;
- Valid Coast Guard Medical Card;
- Valid TWIC;
- 1-3 years of experience, preferably with a tugboat company.
