Stevens Transportation LLC is hiring an Able Bodied Seaman to serve aboard vessels operating out of Charleston, SC.

General Description

Unless otherwise defined by applicable law, any employment relationship with STEVENS TRANSPORTATION, LLC is of an "at-will" nature, which means the employee may resign at any time and STEVENS TRANSPORTATION, LLC may discharge the employee at any time with or without cause.

Work Environment

Constant outside working conditions and frequent engine room conditions with loud noise, fumes, odors, chemicals, dust, extreme cold, extreme heat, and risks of electrical shock, sun glare and/or exposure to arc lights. Occasional inside conditions.

Essential Functions
  • Understand and comprehend duties and responsibilities given by the Captain/Mate.
  • Learn and comply with all Safety and Pollution Prevention Regulations and Procedures at all times under the company’s Safety Management System.
  • Maintain non-engineering areas of the vessel in good condition: clean inside and outside, scrub and wash floors, wash windows, polish brass equipment, wash and paint exterior decks and bulkheads.
  • Assist with cooking meals and keeping the galley clean when requested.
  • Assist in cargo operations, docking and undocking, handling rigging for cargo operations, and operating deck equipment when docking or departing.
  • Secure large working lines quickly; handle vessel's working lines and mooring lines including hawsers, cables, bridles, shock lines, and retrieving lines as experience dictates.
  • Check navigation lights regularly and ensure the vessel is ready for sea immediately after it leaves the dock.
  • Check and adjust protective fenders during landing, take them in upon departure, and adjust as necessary.
  • Sweep and mop the vessel interior and wipe bulkheads and overhead daily after each trip.
  • If cooking duties are assigned, wash dishes, pots, pans and cutlery after each meal, return items to proper location, and clean the stove and oven completely once a week.
  • Clean and defrost the refrigerator at least once a week and the freezer at least once a month, arranging food supplies to prevent damage at sea.
  • Scrub toilet heads daily and scrub the shower stall and rack once a week; empty all trash and garbage daily, clean ashtrays, and sweep the vessel regularly.
  • Assist the engineer as required; collaborate in all engineering tasks with reciprocal assistance as needed.
  • Splice and care for all lines under instruction from the Captain.
  • Possess a USCG Seaman's document as Able Bodied Seaman with a valid STCW 95 certificate endorsed for a navigational watch.
  • Check all life preservers to ensure proper stowage and that they are not used as pillows.
  • Be physically able to lift, carry, and work with heavy rigging, often stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing, or balancing.
  • Regularly lift and move loads up to 10 pounds, 25 pounds, 50 pounds, and occasionally up to 100 pounds with assistance.
  • Apply commonsense to carry out instructions given in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Handle multiple tasks within a given day.
  • Be fully conversant with emergency procedures and life‑saving equipment onboard.
Qualifications
  • USCG minimum rating of Able Bodied Seaman with STCW VI/1 and STCW VI/2, RFPNW, Safety Awareness on the document.
  • TWIC card.
  • Valid passport.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to travel 30 to 60 days per trip.
  • Detailed work history.
  • Submit to and pass alcohol and drug tests as mandated by the USCG, including pre‑employment, random, reasonable cause, and post‑accident testing.
