Deckhand (189) – Stevens Towing Company

Bio: 6‑day old posting, competing for the first 25 applicants. Job based in Charleston, SC with a salary range of $1,000.00–$1,400.00 per month and full‑time employment. Opening is currently active.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Employment is at‑will, meaning either party may terminate the relationship at any time without cause. The role requires the ability to understand duties assigned by the Captain/Mate and to maintain the vessel’s non‑engineering areas. Work includes cleaning, cooking, line handling, towing gear management, and routine inspections of barges and safety equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Constant exposure to outdoor elements such as loud noise, fumes, chemicals, dust, extreme temperatures, along with occasional interior conditions.

QUALIFICATIONS

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Understand and comply with duties and responsibilities
  • Scrub down the boat after each trip
  • Secure lines, ready the vessel for sea promptly after departure
  • Check masthead, stern, sidelights and anchor light status; report to Captain/Mate
  • Inspect protective fenders during landings, adjustments, and departures
  • Daily interior cleaning – mop floor, wipe bulkheads and overhead surfaces
  • Wash dishes, pots, pans, cutlery after each meal; weekly stove, oven, refrigerator cleanup
  • Scrub toilet heads daily; shower stall/rack weekly; dispose trash and ashtrays daily
  • Assist the engineer as required and expect reciprocal assistance
  • Splice and care for lines; follow Captain’s instruction on seamanship
  • Apply for a Merchant Mariners Document, provide copies to Stevens Towing Company
  • Check life preservers; ensure proper stowage
  • Physical ability to lift, carry, and work with heavy rigging (10‑50 lb routine; occasional 100 lb with help)
  • Operate under adverse conditions, near water, and tight schedules
  • Perform multi‑tasking and follow emergency procedures
