Join to apply for the Dean of Students role at BelovED Community & Empowerment Academy Charter Schools

Empowerment Academy Charter School is hiring a Dean of Students for our Middle School for the 2025-2026 school year and beyond, ideally starting this summer. This is a 12-month leadership position. Please review the requirements carefully before applying.

Base Salary: $88,500-$103,500

Hours: 7:15am-3:45pm (with some additional later nights)

About Our School

Empowerment Academy is a dynamic, successful charter school supporting its teachers and staff across three campuses, with BelovED as our sister school. We serve a highly diverse student body in Jersey City, Hoboken, and NYC. Since its founding in 2015 with grades K-1, the school has expanded each year and will serve grades K-10 in SY24-25, with three academies.

About The Position

The school is divided into academies—Primary, Upper Elementary/Middle School, and High School—each led by a Principal, Academic Dean(s), and Dean(s) of Students. Deans of Students maintain a safe, orderly environment and foster a scholar culture that promotes academic excellence and social contribution. They collaborate closely with their Academy Dean and Principal.

Responsibilities include implementing positive discipline, supporting classroom management development, and developing student life activities aligned with Empowerment’s vision.

Responsibilities
Behavioral Management
  • Implement and manage positive discipline systems.
  • Use age-appropriate behavior management tools.
  • Train staff on behavior policies and strategies.
  • Serve as a resource for classroom management and discipline issues.
  • Ensure consistent documentation of incidents.
  • Meet with students referred for behavioral issues.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians about discipline.
  • Address acute behavioral problems appropriately.
  • Coordinate student removals when necessary.
  • Identify misbehavior patterns and respond accordingly.
Scholar Culture
  • Lead development of a Scholar Culture Plan.
  • Create rituals, protocols, and physical environment elements to promote culture.
Attendance & Time Management
  • Engage with students and parents on attendance standards.
  • Monitor class transitions and implement systems to maximize learning time.
  • Attend professional development and provide after-school training as needed.
Reporting & Relationships

Report to the Academy’s Academic Dean and/or Principal, collaborating with teachers, student support staff, and leadership team members. May also lead professional development, coaching, and scheduling tasks.

Minimum Requirements
  • Teaching experience with a minimum of five years in similar environments.
  • N.J. Teaching Certificate.
  • Proven success in the outlined responsibilities.
  • Strong commitment to the school’s mission.
  • Read and master "Teach Like a Champion" and "With All Due Respect".
