Organization Overview

Vertex is a pioneering, first-of-its-kind IB-for-all academy in the heart of the Bronx. Vertex is not just a school: it's a bold reimagining of what education can be.

Our mission is to provide students with pathways for upward mobility while preparing them for the responsibilities of self-governance in a democratic republic. Everything we do is rooted in the four cardinal virtues: courage, justice, temperance, and wisdom.

At Vertex, our scholars have agency. Each day, they make choices about the kind of people they want to become, the lives they want to lead, and the society they want to build. It’s our sacred duty to equip them with the knowledge most worth having, to sharpen their critical thinking, and to create a space where they can explore, question, and create.

As an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World School with a classical core, we offer both a rigorous academic foundation and a transformative character education.

Position Summary

The Dean of Students is a key member of the pastoral team, responsible for ensuring that Vertex maintains a safe, structured, and mission-aligned school environment. This role focuses on upholding school-wide norms, managing discipline systems, and cultivating the habits of character that prepare students to live lives guided by courage, justice, temperance, and wisdom.

We believe that clear expectations, consistently upheld, create a school environment that is safe, predictable, and responsive — conditions essential not only for academic excellence, but for the full flourishing of each student.

Key Responsibilities

School Culture & Discipline

  • Maintain a calm, orderly, and mission-aligned school environment across all shared spaces
  • Enforce school-wide systems and expectations around attendance, punctuality, uniform, behavior, and preparedness
  • Respond decisively to behavioral issues using consistent, transparent procedures and consequences
  • Track and analyze behavior data to inform student interventions and school-wide improvements
  • Lead daily supervision during transitions, lunch, arrival, and dismissal to reinforce expectations and build relationships

Student Development & Character Formation

  • Support students in cultivating habits of self-discipline, responsibility, and virtue
  • Help implement advisory and character programming aligned with the school’s four cardinal virtues
  • Lead reentry planning and accountability processes for students returning from suspension or crisis
  • Collaborate with the counseling and student support teams to develop individualized support plans when needed

Family Engagement

  • Maintain regular, proactive communication with families regarding student conduct and growth
  • Lead family meetings and conferences to address behavior concerns and reinforce shared expectations. Build strong, respectful relationships with families, especially during moments of conflict or challenge

Team Leadership & Collaboration

  • Partner with school leadership to shape a strong, cohesive, and values-aligned school culture
  • Provide direct support to new teachers and staff in building consistency and clarity around school norms

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree
  • 3+ years of experience in urban schools, with a track record of success in student culture or discipline
  • Proven ability to manage systems, lead with clarity, and hold students to high standards
  • Calm, confident presence in challenging situations
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Deep alignment with Vertex’s mission and belief in the formative power of structure, consistency, and virtue
  • Experience in a classical, IB, or virtue-based school setting (preferred)
  • Spanish proficiency (preferred)
  • Familiarity with MTSS frameworks or student support systems (preferred)
