What is the Role?
The Dean of Students (DOS) is focused on building student culture and works collaboratively with teachers, families, leadership, social workers, and special education coordinators to meet the needs of all students at Coney Island Prep. Responsibilities include writing behavior improvement plans, coaching teachers on their implementation, community building through event planning, and infusing joy into school culture. By developing strong culture systems, the DOS directly influences student success in the classroom.
What You’ll Be Asked To Do
Whole School Responsibilities
- Work directly with the VP of Culture, who will be your manager and coach; collaborate with the Principal, Culture Team, and Operations Team on student orientation planning and implementation.
- Create, evaluate, and continually improve the school culture to be academically focused, joyful, safe, secure, and conducive to positive, age-appropriate relationships.
- Organize and coordinate incentive systems and key family events.
- Lead community meetings, celebrations, and whole-school events or meetings.
- Facilitate professional development sessions on trauma-informed practices.
- Proactively develop systems to promote positive student behavior and a culture of achievement.
- Ensure students meet dress code expectations daily by checking uniforms.
Student Behavior
- Use a trauma-informed approach to address and manage behaviors.
- Support students in internalizing and practicing the school's PRIDE values.
- Monitor student behavior both inside and outside the classroom.
- Assist teachers in addressing behavioral issues promptly to maximize instructional time.
- Engage with families to create successful behavior plans for students needing additional support.
- Manage the referral process, suspensions, and restorative consequences.
Instructional Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Leadership Team to observe and support teacher development.
- Assist with the internalization, facilitation, and feedback process for Advisory groups in coordination with Special Education Coordinators and Social Workers.
- Provide classroom management support and coaching to teachers.
- Help teachers implement trauma-informed classroom systems.
- Participate in grade teams to ensure effective collaboration to meet student needs.

- Bachelor's degree required; Master’s degree and NYS teaching certification preferred.
- Lead teaching experience highly preferred.
- Previous charter school experience is a plus.
- Experience with organizational systems like Schoolrunner, Excel, Torsh, or Google Sheets is a plus but not required.
