Job Summary

Mesa Community College seeks an innovative and collaborative leader to serve as Dean of Math and Science. The Dean provides strategic leadership for the college's mathematics, science, and computer science disciplines, fostering academic excellence, innovation, and student success across a broad portfolio of instructional programs. The Dean also oversees the Learning Enhancement Center, which provides comprehensive tutoring and academic support services that strengthen student learning and success across the college.

As a member of the Academic Affairs leadership team, the Dean plays a central role in advancing the college's strategic priorities. The position provides leadership for faculty recruitment, development, evaluation, curriculum and program quality, assessment of student learning, program review, budgeting, and resource stewardship while ensuring compliance with accreditation standards and district policies. Working in close partnership with department chairs, faculty, staff, Student Affairs, and community and industry partners, the Dean helps create high‑quality educational experiences that promote student access, persistence, completion, transfer, and workforce success.

The successful candidate will be a collaborative and visionary academic leader with a demonstrated commitment to shared governance, faculty engagement, and evidence‑informed decision making. They will possess exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to build strong relationships across diverse constituencies, and a passion for advancing student success through innovation, continuous improvement, and inclusive excellence.

Essential Functions

• Leads academic programs, academic student support programs, and instructional initiatives in a shared governance environment
• Guides evidence‑based decision‑making aligned with college and district strategic priorities
• Leads an academic leadership team comprised of department chairs within the dean's supervisory area
• Collaborates with academic and student affairs administrators, faculty, staff, and community partners to promote college initiatives
• Collaborates with partners to develop and promote higher education pathways, including dual enrollment and university transfer
• Addresses conflict involving faculty, staff, or students through timely, policy‑guided resolution
• Advances college‑wide initiatives related to teaching excellence and student success
• May be assigned supervision of a programmatic area that serves all of academic affairs, such as the Honors Program, the center for Civic and Community Engagement, or the Learning Enhancement Center
• Supports the recruitment, onboarding, evaluation, and retention of faculty
• Promotes faculty professional development and instructional innovation
• Oversees program review, assessment of student learning, and curricular development
• Ensures compliance with institutional and programmatic accreditation requirements
• Oversees budget planning and resource allocation
• Supports schedule development and enrollment management strategies
• Participates in college councils, district committees, and community engagement efforts
• Leads special projects and ensures compliance with district, state, and federal regulations
• Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in a teaching field related to math, natural science, physical science, life science, engineering, or closely related field and five (5) years of experience in an academic leadership and/or supervisory role in higher education and three (3) years of teaching that includes curriculum/coursework development. Examples of academic leadership/supervisory experience includes: division/department chair, project management, policy development, administration, evaluation and compliance, committee leadership, program director, and shared governance. No degree equivalency.

Desired Qualifications

• An earned doctorate or terminal degree in a recognized academic field of study from an accredited institution.
• Higher education teaching experience, preferably in community colleges.
• Experience serving as a dean, department chair, program director, or equivalent academic leadership role.
• Experience providing leadership for multiple departments in a complex system, such as a multi‑campus college or multi‑college system.
• Demonstrated commitment to evidence‑based decision‑making and data‑informed academic planning.
• Experience in leading student success initiatives.
• Experience with accreditation, program review, and assessment of student learning.
• One year of relevant full‑time MCCCD experience during the previous two years.

Additional Requirements

Standard work schedule varies during the year: August through mid‑May: Monday - Friday, 8 hour days; mid‑May through the end of July: Monday - Thursday, 10 hour days. Some evenings and weekends required to attend college events/activities. Required to sit for a prolonged period of time; viewing a computer monitor. May be required to travel or be assigned to another MCCD location. Travel to campus during interview/selection process will be at candidate's own expense. MCC does not sponsor individuals for work visas.
