Data Center Engineering Operations Technician

Description

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. We support all AWS data centers, including servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment, ensuring continual access to our customers. We work on challenging problems with many variables impacting the supply chain and seek talented individuals to help us. You'll join a diverse team of engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and more, collaborating across AWS to uphold safety, security, and cost-efficiency while fostering an inclusive culture that encourages innovation and ownership.

Our engineering technicians help maintain some of the most sophisticated, secure data centers worldwide by testing and implementing new technologies and work practices to meet evolving demands.

Key job responsibilities

  1. Conduct daily building rounds to monitor electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment, ensuring 24/7 reliability.
  2. Monitor Building Management Systems (BMS) and Electrical Power Management System (EPMS).
  3. Assist in troubleshooting facility and rack-level events within SLAs.
  4. Perform rack installations and decommissioning within SLAs.
  5. Perform preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and repairs on electrical and mechanical equipment.
  6. Create technical documentation to support change management.
  7. Manage daily work requests from initiation to resolution and execute projects from start to finish.
  8. Support on-site contractors, ensuring work complies with practices, procedures, and legislation.
  9. Work shifts up to 12 hours, possibly rotating, and support multiple locations as needed.

Physical Requirements

Willingness and ability to work under physical conditions, with accommodations as needed:

  • Lift/move up to 39 pounds independently; participate in group lifts for heavier loads.
  • Maintain balance and perform tasks on ladders.
  • Walk, handle objects, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, twist, bend, work overhead, grasp, carry, push, and pull objects.
  • Work in environments requiring ear protection.

Typical Day

This role involves hands-on preventative maintenance and troubleshooting of electrical and mechanical equipment, reporting to a Facility Manager. Equipment includes generators, switchgear, UPS, batteries, cooling systems, pumps, motors, fire safety systems, and building automation systems.

Basic Qualifications

  • Technical training or 2+ years in electrical, mechanical, HVAC, fire systems, or relevant industry experience.
  • 2+ years of experience with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 4+ years in data center operations or facilities.
  • Associates or Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
