Job summary

Stony Brook Medicine is seeking a Cytogenetics & Laboratory Quality Systems Support Assistant to join the Cytogenetics Laboratory and assist with quality systems management. The role emphasizes data processing, QA/QC tasks, and regulatory compliance to ensure accurate patient results.

The selected candidate will support audits, document controls, prepare statistical reports, and assist in daily operations while maintaining high standards of accuracy and communication within a collaborative team.

Qualifications

• An associate degree with at least two years of clinical laboratory experience.
• Knowledge of clinical laboratory operations and information systems.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Clerical and basic computer skills (MS Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Responsibilities

• Proficient with electronic data processing systems such as Cerner Powerchart, CoPath, Sunquest, Policy Manager and Lawson.
• Accurate transcription and reporting of test results in CoPath and manual log.
• Familiarity with QA/QC functions and audits and related documentation.
• Compile data and statistical reports for regulatory reporting or continuous quality monitoring.
• Create and implement new Quarterly Audits under supervision of the Quality Systems Manager.
• Accession specimens accurately using electronic and manual systems.
• Provide administrative support to Cytogenetics laboratory staff, the Associate Technical Director and Quality Systems Manager.
• Maintain professional conduct as a representative of the Department of Laboratories.
• Perform monthly inventory and maintain adequate supplies.
• Conduct laboratory maintenance activities to regulatory standards (temperature monitoring, glassware prep, instrument sterilization, filing).
• Answer telephone courteously and relay messages promptly.
• Document corrective actions for non-conformances and deviations from performance specs.
• Understand and comply with regulatory standards (JCAHO, CAP, NYS DOH CLEP).
• Assist in developing standardized forms and reference cards for lab tests and processes.
• Carry out daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and semi-annual audits, plus ad-hoc QA projects.
