Job summary

Harford County Public Schools is seeking a Custodian I Substitute for the 2026-2027 school year. The on-site role covers routine cleaning, maintenance and upkeep of buildings, grounds, and equipment, with shifts up to 20 hours per week and a summer workload for internal candidates.

The position requires a high school diploma or GED (preferred) and physical ability to perform duties up to 50 pounds, with potential driving responsibilities and eligibility for varied schedules.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Minimum ninth grade education required; testing may be used to assess reading and comprehension of instructions.
• One year of experience in custodial, mechanical trade or related area preferred.
• Physically able to perform essential duties including lifting up to 50 pounds and climbing ladders or working at heights.

Responsibilities

• Selects appropriate equipment and supplies and sweeps and cleans floors in classrooms, offices, corridors, and other assigned areas.
• Uses custodial equipment such as brooms, mops, vacuums, buffers, and other cleaning tools.
• Collects and disposes of trash and garbage; unloads supplies and stores them properly.
• Maintains lavatories clean and sanitary; washes and cleans windows, fixtures, and other items; may involve climbing or scaffolding.
• Assists in snow removal, lawn and playground maintenance, and emergency situations as directed.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
