Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Completion of the Maine Criminal Justice Academy Pre-Service Law Enforcement Training program.
• Candidates not yet trained may be sponsored by the Judicial Branch on a case-by-case basis.
• Ability to interact effectively with judges, court staff, attorneys, and the public.
• Eligible for certification as a Judicial Marshal within one year of employment.
• Qualified with an agency-issued firearm per Maine CJ Academy standards.
• Ability to walk, stand, or sit for extended periods.
• Willingness to pass a polygraph and national fingerprinting.

Responsibilities

• Serves as Judicial Marshal for the court, ensuring security for each court day and session.
• Enforces Maine law within the courthouse and conducts arrests when necessary.
• Observes all persons entering the courtroom and monitors movement.
• Assists with the movement of paperwork and evidence between judges, clerks, defendants, and other participants.
• Patrols public areas and maintains a courthouse presence.
• Announces opening, recess, and closing of court sessions.
• Directs people to locations and provides schedule information.
• Ensures parties are present before proceedings.
• Maintains mandatory annual training including CPR/First Aid and firearms qualifications.
• Responds to emergencies to ensure safety and security.
