Job summary

The State of South Carolina is seeking a supervisory security professional to oversee housing unit staff and custody of inmates, reporting to the Shift Lieutenant. Your role includes inspections, investigations, counts, and guiding staff performance and training while ensuring safety and compliance.

This position requires completion of eight weeks of SCDC Basic Training on hire; a high school diploma with relevant experience is required, and a criminal justice degree may substitute for

Qualifications

• A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.
• A degree in criminal justice or a related field may substitute for 1/2 of the required experience.
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and complete the basic supervisory course within six months of entry.

Responsibilities

• Oversee subordinate security assigned to housing units and custody/control of inmates.
• Conduct routine inspections of living areas for security, safety and sanitation compliance.
• Investigate alleged misconduct by inmates and security personnel.
• Supervise shifts, evaluate staff, counsel, recommend discipline, and train personnel.
• Prepare reports as needed.
