Job summary

South Carolina Department of Corrections is seeking a security supervisor to oversee the actions of the security staff and the custody and control of inmates in medium/maximum facilities. You will coordinate security across assigned units and ensure OSHA standards are met.

The role requires supervisory experience, a high school diploma, and completion of SCDC training and basic supervisory courses within six months of hire. A bachelor’s degree can substitute for some supervisory experience.

Qualifications

• High school diploma and three years’ experience in correctional, security, military, or police work with one year of supervisory experience.
• A degree in criminal justice or related field may substitute for supervisory experience year-for-year.
• Must be certified by the SCDC training academy and complete the basic supervisory course within six months of entry.
• Must successfully complete eight weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Responsibilities

• Plans, coordinates and directs the actions of the security staff and oversees security, custody and control of inmates in assigned unit(s).
• Assumes primary responsibility for security of all buildings and public property.
• Makes routine checks of the unit(s) to ensure subordinate staff are performing their duties properly and safely, and that cleanliness and OSHA standards are maintained.
• Assists with all inmates counts for accuracy.
• Investigates complaints and violations; Arbitrates disputes among inmate population and correctional staff.
