Job summary

Description of Work

Reporting to the Correctional Lieutenant I, this position will be responsible for assigning lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Overseeing officers' activities and performance and ensuring that the custody, security and welfare of offenders is maintained.
• Arranging work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implementing operational procedures, and ensuring rules and regulations are followed according to policy.
• Ensuring staff is fully trained and that proper conduct, actions and procedures are followed.
• Maintaining facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance and health and safety of offenders.
• Giving direction during drills, searches, and in emergencies.
• Leading staff in carrying out tactical assignment(s).
• Responding to emergencies, searches for escaped offenders, and transports offenders.
• Conducting and/or supervising searches of offenders, their living quarters, and work areas for contraband.
• Investigating and acting, where appropriate, regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints.
• Preparing and reviewing a variety of reports.
• Completing annual performance evaluations and assisting in assessing, evaluating, and implementing employee discipline.
• Conducting staff briefing sessions.
• Performing other related duties as required.

Salary Range

$37,377 - $65,408

The salary grade for this position is NC07 . State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity.
