Description of Work

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

This position in located at Bertie Correctional Institution in Windsor, NC. Reporting to the Correctional Programs Director I, this position will ensure the effective verbal and written communication with other staff, offenders, and the general public. This position is responsible for providing and supervising programs for the rehabilitation of offenders at a close-custody correctional facility. The primary programs areas are offender classification; correctional programs including educational/vocational, volunteer program s, religion, and recreation, and correctional counseling.

Other responsibilities of this position include the following:
  • Reviewing, analyzing, and evaluating various documents and behavioral data gathered from interviews, written documentation, and personal observations.
  • Effectively train, observe, evaluate, and supervise subordinate staff in their duties and responsibilities.
  • Developing, implementing, and managing correctional programs.
  • Demonstrating and instructing offenders in the proper and safe use of tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Accurately operating various office machines and preparing written reports and forms which accurately reflect information reviewed from various sources.
  • Performing crisis interventions and routine counseling to include suicide prevention.
  • Working in all sections of a Close/Medium Custody prison facility, working under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders who can become physically violent and verbally abusive, and being capable of defending oneself against attacks by violent persons.
  • Accounting for supplies and equipment and conducting continuous visual and audio surveillance of assigned work area.
  • Obtain Notary of the public certification to provide notary services for the offender population.
  • Conduct DCI checks for volunteers and contracted staff through local community college partner.
Qualifications and Preferences

Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

  • Knowledge of supportive counseling techniques.
  • Knowledge of services available to individuals from the community and other public and private programs.
Salary Range

$39,244 - $68,679

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in a human services or criminal justice field from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in corrections or related work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications

Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

About the Division of Institutions:

The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety, security, and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff, program facilitators, and administrative personnel.
