Job summary

The NC Department of Adult Correction is seeking a Correctional Sergeant I (S) at Gaston Correctional Center in Dallas, NC. The role involves supervising a shift of officers responsible for male offenders in a minimum custody facility, ensuring safety and policy compliance.

Reporting to the Associate Warden, you will manage post assignments, review reports, maintain custody documents and participate in facility inspections.

Description of Work

This position is located at Gaston Correctional Center. Gaston Correctional Center is located in Dallas, North Carolina and houses up to 242 male offenders in a minimum custody facility.

Reporting to the Associate Warden, this position provides supervision for subordinate officers regarding their assigned tasks with male offenders in a minimum custody state correctional facility. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Supervising a shift of employees, conducting shift line-up, making shift schedules, and inspecting all personnel to determine if they are physically and mentally capable of assuming an assigned post.
• Completing, reviewing, and maintaining time reports, duty rosters, leave schedules, all required custody reports, performance evaluations, and administrative forms.
• Reviewing all logs, reports, and required documentation from shift rotations.
• Accounting for persons and funds to ensure that all assigned equipment is operationally ready.
• Handling activities relating to the custody and welfare of offenders.
• Conducting inspections of offender living areas, medical and kitchen areas, and the facility as a whole to identify possible safety hazards and to ensure operations are being followed per policy.
• Working rotating and various duty assignments within the defined level of work.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade Range: $37,377.00 - $65,408.00

About The Division of Institutions :

The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety, security, and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff, program facilitators, and administrative personnel.
