Qualifications

Job Description

Reporting to the assigned department Manager, the Cook assists in meal preparation for delivery of meal, cafeteria, and catering food services. They also perform inventory control functions for the department. The Cook is responsible for preparing food items and managing related food inventories based on rotational meal cycles, portion control, and recipe standards. Duties are performed in accordance with organizational policies, the Public Health Act, the Canadian Restaurant and Food Service Association’s Sanitation Code of Practice, HACCP food safety protocols, WHMIS, and Occupational Health and Safety standards.

Required Qualifications and Experience
  • Valid Inter-Provincial Red Seal Cook's Certificate, Journeyman Chef’s Certificate, or an equivalent combination of recognized training and work experience in a similar institutional food service environment.
  • Valid Certificate in Food Safety Code of Practice with the Canadian Restaurant and Food Services Association (CRFA).
  • Minimum two years recent experience as a cook, preferably in a hospital setting.
  • Previous institutional experience is an asset.
Role Responsibilities
  • Prepare food for client, cafeteria, and catering orders using menu rotation, schedules, production sheets, and recipe standards.
  • Present food attractively, ensuring proper garnishing and presentation techniques.
  • Prepare and serve food at appropriate temperatures following HACCP guidelines.
  • Provide input to the Manager on quality improvements related to food preparation.
  • Participate in taste panels, staff meetings, training, and production reviews.
  • Complete and submit food orders based on par levels and manage inventory using FIFO practices.
  • Analyze standard par levels and recommend adjustments as needed.
